Power Station Block 7B

San Francisco, CA

Workforce housing in a new waterfront neighborhood built on the site of a decommissioned fossil fuel plant

San Francisco needs more housing, and the Power Station project in the Dogpatch will create a new mixed-use neighborhood, including both affordable and market rate housing, on a formerly abandoned industrial site. Our project on Block 7B is eight stories of 100% affordable, workforce housing, including a mix of studios, one, and two-bedroom apartments. The project will be the first to be built in this new neighborhood.

The design nods to the industrial past of the site with exterior weathering steel panels, while the interior includes a co-working space, significant bike storage capacity to encourage low carbon transportation, and a rooftop patio with views of the San Francisco bay. As the new neighborhood is built out, eventually the building will be surrounded by new mixed-used development, walking distance from retail, restaurants, and new parks.

The building has now officially been named the Sophie Maxwell Building, after former city supervisor Sophie Maxwell, who has championed environmental justice, clean energy, and housing development throughout her career. The project redevelops the site of the last fossil-fuel-burning power plant in San Francisco, representing the city’s progress in reducing reliance on fossil fuels and turning toward clean energy.
