Casa Adelante Affordable Housing

2828 16th Street, San Francisco, CA

New affordable housing in my own backyard

This eight-story, mixed apartment and townhome building provides 143 much-needed new homes on the site of a former bakery down the street from my own home in the Mission neighborhood of San Francisco. The project also provides significant new ground-floor space for non-profits, including HOMEY, Galeria de la Raza, and Felton Institute’s Solmar Early Childhood Learning Center. The project was developed by a partnership between MEDA, the Mission Economic Development Agency, and TNDC, the Tenderloin Neighborhood Development Corporation, two non-profit developers with deep ties and insight into the neighborhood.

The design provides community spaces with plentiful natural light; a second-floor podium with outdoor space and breezeway; and a roof garden for growing fresh fruit and vegetables, maintained by an urban farming organization. The podium level also includes several apartments designed as in-home daycare centers, that can be converted between daycare and multi-bedroom apartments. No on-site parking is necessary since the building has a large bike room and a MUNI stop right out front.
